Surveillance for Wild Bird Die-offs

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is cooperatively working with the Florida Department of Health on a wild bird mortality database. This project was initiated to support surveillance for bird die-offs and to aid in monitoring for West Nile Virus (WNV). This virus, found to cause disease in humans, birds, and other vertebrates, was first documented  in the northeastern United States in August 1999. During the initial outbreak biologists documented an unusually large number of dead crows.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has additional information.
We are also interested in monitoring bird electrocutions from power lines and poles so that faulty facilities may be repaired.
